Lure Head Technology
Materials
At Sekard Technology we mould all our lure heads in polyurethane resin.
Polyurethanes are modern, high performance engineering plastics which exhibit exceptional properties of
strength and durability. They are expensive and require specialist processing but the quality and
performance of the finished products makes this well worth the effort. Polyurethanes are available
in a huge range of different specifications ranging from very soft (as soft as human skin) to very
hard (as hard as granite). This allows us to select products that give the optimum properties for
lure manufacture and to satisfy our customers demanding requirements.
IMPORTANT. Please do not confuse the Polyurethanes used by Sekard Technology with the low cost polyester
resins used by many other lure manufacturers. Polyester resin was the material originally developed for
bonding fibreglass and is the material that was used decades ago by the first manufacturers of
resin head lures. Polyester is cheap and it is hard and shiny and looks good when new, but it
has much inferior strength properties when compared with the superior polyurethanes.
Polyester is far more prone to shattering, cracking and UV degradation.
Hard and Soft Heads
We offer our range of resin head lures in a choice of either Soft or Hard resin. For those with a technical interest the soft polyurethane has a specification of Shore A 50 and the hard version is Shore D 80. The soft resin has just enough ‘give’ to feel natural, but is still firm enough to feel slick and shiny and to have good durability. The hard version is very hard, but it is also very tough. It is not brittle, and is highly resistant to shattering and chipping, even in the most demanding circumstances.
Why do we make both soft and hard head lures? Simply, to give our customers the choice. There are two schools of thought on the subject of lure heads. Some say that soft heads are better as they feel more natural and are less likely to spook the fish, resulting in more aggressive attacks and encouraging the fish to come back for a second strike if it misses the first time. The argument against soft heads is that they can be gripped more easily in the fish’s jaws, which inhibits a good hook-up. In comparison, hard heads are so slick and shiny that the fish cannot grip the head and it will slip easily through its jaws, allowing the hook to pull home more easily. But a hard head feels very unnatural, so if a fish strikes the lure, but does not take it cleanly, it may be spooked and not come back for a second strike.
The discussion about hard and soft heads will never end and there are merits to both sides of the argument, so at Sekard Technology we make every resin head lure in both hard and soft resins, so the customer can choose.
Head Colours
Sekard Technology lures differ from many products on the market in that our heads are made in solid, opaque, coloured resin, instead of the clear transparent resin that is commonly used by many other lure manufacturers. Why is this? Clear heads look very aesthetically appealing with the internal eyes and coloured shiny inserts, so why make plain coloured heads? In the past we did ‘follow the crowd’ and made very fancy clear heads, we thought that was what customers wanted and expected so that is what we should make. Now we will let you into a little secret, most of the lures on the market are designed to catch fishermen far more than they are designed to catch fish! But we have decided that we are in the business of making lures to catch FISH, so everything we put into a Sekard Technology lure is designed to enhance its fish catching properties, nothing more, nothing less. We like to say that with a Sekard Technology lure you get everything you need and nothing you don’t need. Pure fish catching simplicity!
The whole essence of a lure is that it must attract fish and to do this it needs to be as visible and attention grabbing as possible, it needs to have ‘presence’ in the water. The types of lures that we manufacture are surface trolling lures, i.e. they run on, or close to, the surface of the water. A patrolling fish will usually first see the lure from below, looking upwards with the lure silhouetted against the surface of the water and the sky above. A solid head colour gives a far stronger silhouette than a clear head and is therefore far more visible to the fish. Until a fish sees the lure it cannot eat it, so visibility is vital!
The standard colours we offer for all the head styles, in both hard and soft resin, are Black, White, Purple, Blue and Green. We can also produce some other colours to special order if the customer has specific requirements. But, if you are unsure which colours to choose we suggest you select Black and White. Use the Black lures on cloudy, overcast days and the White lures on bright sunny days. Keep it simple and remove one factor from the decision making process.
The Sekard Technology Smoke Tail™ skirts add still further to the fish attracting visibility of our lures, you can read about our skirts in a separate section – Smoke Tail™ Skirt Technology.
Skirt Fitting
Attention to detail is very important to us at Sekard Technology and we pay very close attention to the quality of our materials, right down to the smallest component, and we assemble those materials with meticulous care. For example, we use a section of brass tube to form a spigot fitting which holds the Smoke Tail™ skirts in place. This tube is marine grade brass made to our own specification. It is moulded into the lure head as it is made, it is not glued in later, so the tube becomes an integral part of the lure and cannot pull out or come loose. The brass section is lined with a plastic tube, which means that the leader can never come into direct contact with the brass.
Crimp Lock
The push-on skirt fitting that holds the outer and inner skirts incorporates an integral Crimp Lock to hold the crimp and to help keep the hook-set in correct alignment with the lure. The Crimp Lock is an integral part of the skirt fitting, it is not glued on, so it cannot come loose or tear off. The skirt fitting is made out of a highly tear resistant flexible polyurethane, which has similar properties to natural rubber. Simply push the crimp into the Crimp Lock and it will hold in place. Clearly the Crimp Lock cannot be sized to be a perfect fit for every size of crimp. It will be a correct fit for crimps at the larger end of the scale; smaller crimps may need a couple of wraps of insulating tape to make them a snug fit.
Leader Tube
All Sekard Technology lures have a one piece anti-chafe leader tube running straight through the lure head, from nose to tail. This tube is PVC, which has good wear resistance but is soft enough to ensure that the leader cannot wear or chafe against the lure head, even during a long arduous fight with a giant fish. Small size lures have a 3mm (1/8 inch) internal diameter leader tube which will accommodate monofilament leaders up to approx. 600lb. The medium and large size lures have a 4mm (5/32 inch) internal diameter leader tube which will accommodate monofilament leaders way heavier than you should every need to use.
